The Poppleton Brothers

The Poppleton Brothers is a brand new project led by alto saxophonist Damon Poppleton & trumpeter Flynn Poppleton. They have teamed up with jazz luminaries Hugh Barrett on piano, & Thomas Botting on bass, along with excellent emerging drummer Elliott Carter to perform a range of their favourite swinging tunes from the jazz lineage. This is a gig not to be missed!

Damon Poppleton is a 21 year old jazz saxophonist, composer & bandleader. He is the Winner of the 2019 James Morrison Jazz Scholarship & in 2023 was awarded the Barry Stewart Prize for Most Outstanding Jazz Musician. He has worked with leading Australian musicians incl. John Morrison, Dave Panichi & Andrew Dickeson. In 2022, one of Damon’s big band compositions “Foster Eyes” was performed by Andrew Robertson’s Big Band across multiple performances at Foundry616 as well as at that year’s Manly Jazz Festival. He also performed & composed music for the October 2023 Sydney Conservatorium sponsored tour of Hanoi, Vietnam led by Dr. Steve Barry, with one of his compositions “Encounter At The Tops” being performed on Vietnamese TV.

Flynn Poppleton is a 17 year old jazz trumpeter, composer & arranger. Currently in Year 12 at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, he has played trumpet in the NSW Public Schools Jazz Orchestra since 2021, an elite interschool high school level big band, & in the Newtown High School Jazz Orchestra since 2019. He has previously been involved in the Schools Spectacular, performing in the Stage Band in 2022 &  2023, & was part of the 2019 iteration of John Morrison's AIM Studio Youth Orchestra. In 2019 at age 12, Flynn was a winner of the International Jazz Day composition competition, selected by Herbie Hancock. His winning piece was then expanded by an LA based arranger to be performed by the NSW Public Schools Jazz Orchestra at Government House in Melbourne on International Jazz Day 2019.

James Morrison said about Damon: "Occasionally a musician comes along who plays way beyond their years. We then usually say how good they are for their age...but at only 16 years of age, Damon Poppleton would be called great if he played like that at 50!"
