Paper Cut

Paper Cut is a contemporary performance collective based in Newcastle, Australia. We make new performance work through a collaborative process, blending theatrical forms and testing the boundaries of traditional theatre. Our work is bold, sharp and playful.

In 2013 Paper Cut won the City of Newcastle Drama Award for Best New Play with their verbatim work The Past is a Foreign Country.

Paper Cut's artists have experience in performance, devising, directing and producing, and share a commitment to creating innovative new work that contributes to the diversity of Newcastle's cultural environment.

Sarah Coffee is a performer, deviser, writer and researcher. She has collaborated on the documentary theatre based Spent (Crack Theatre Festival 2013) and the new verbatim work The Past is a Foreign Country (Crack Theatre Festival 2012). Sarah has also recently submitted her PhD in Media and Communication, for which she undertook an examination of creativity completing a series of feature articles on 20 creative individuals. Sarah is also an associate artist with live art collective Big One Little One, working in a range of capacities including devising, sound design and editing, writing, and performing, on a range of projects such as such as Confetti (winner Best Live Art Melbourne Fringe 2013) and Green Room Award nominated Blind Date.

Tamara Gazzard is a theatre maker, performer, and arts educator. Tamara was a key deviser, performer and producer for Paper Cut's award-winning first production The Past is a Foreign Country (Crack Theatre Festival 2012; Civic Playhouse, Newcastle 2013). Tamara was also a deviser and performer in Spent (Crack Theatre Festival 2013; The Store 2014). In 2011 Tamara completed a theatrical internship with the Sydney-based documentary theatre company version 1.0 and undertook professional development in the method and process of documentary theatre making.Tamara has also been involved with Tantrum Youth Arts as a performer (Grounded 2012), Assistant Director (House on Fire 2013) and writer/director (Opening Doors 2013-2014).

Lucy Shepherd is a theatre maker, performer, director and arts educator. She is currently the Associate Director of Tantrum Youth Arts and a co-founding member of Paper Cut. Recent theatre-making credits include: Diving off the Edge of the World (Tantrum Youth Arts, Newcastle Ocean Baths 2014), Spent (Paper Cut, Crack Theatre Festival 2013), The Past is a Foreign Country (Paper Cut, Playhouse Newcastle, 2013; Crack Theatre Festival 2012).  As an Arts Educator Lucy programs and facilitates workshops for Tantrum Youth Arts. Lucy also recently programmed and delivered a series of dance and theatre workshops with Cadi McCarthy for students with significant disabilities from Newcastle School’s: Junior, Middle and Senior campus, supported by Accessible Arts ‘Delineate’ program.
