Halloween Crafternoon Sunday: The Crooked Craft
“Summon the Sentinel. Shape the Spell.”
🌲Twana-Inspired Stick Totems of Protection
Step into the realm where earth meets spirit, and wood remembers the hands that shaped it. In this workshop, we’ll craft stick figure totems of protection, inspired by the ancestral guardians once placed by the Twana people — Coast Salish tribes of the Pacific Northwest — to guard the boundaries between the seen and unseen.
These humble forms — woven from branch, bone, and intention — were more than decoration. They were watchers, protectors, and messengers, marking sacred space and shielding those within from malevolent forces.
In this sacred space, we’ll explore:
- The mystical symbolism of the Twana protective figures
- How to choose and work with natural materials that call to you
- The ancient idea of threshold guardians — those who stand at the veil
- Techniques to bind, wrap, and consecrate your totem as a protector of your home, altar, or spirit
- Ritual practices to activate your creation with intention, breath, and quiet reverence
While our practice is inspired by the rich traditions of the Twana and Coast Salish peoples, we approach this work not as cultural recreation, but as a personal journey of connection, protection, and sacred craft — rooted in respect for the spirits of the land and the wisdom of those who came before.
