Event Details

Join independent artist Danielle Brame Whiting for a performance of her new work, FLAT PACK at 11am at the Merriwa School of Arts.

For the aspiring writers and performers amongst us, there is an additional workshop available on "Writing Personal Stories for Performance from 1 - 3pm.

Details Below:

WHAT'S FLAT PACK ABOUT?

Debbie's father has dementia and has been moved into care. It's fallen on her to pack up the lifetime of memories strewn across his garage. However, like a flat pack without instructions, before she can pack it all away and move on, she must first unpack all of her memories.

At the heart of this play is the relationship of a daughter and her ailing father, and one woman's reality of being the daughter of a Vietnam Veteran.

The audience is invited to join Debbie in dad's garage as she attempts to organise his things, her memories, her errant sister, her guilt.... and the random flat pack she found behind dad's old paint tins.

WHAT AUDIENCES HAVE SAID

"A tender and dynamically delivered deconstruction of the joy, grief, and revelation that accompanies intergenerational transformation." Luke Carmen

“I cried I laughed and then I cried again!” Lisa Timp

"Captivating storytelling that navigates hilarity, sadness and longing." Marian Davis

"Danielle Brame Whiting's Flatpack is a bold excavation of the legacies of familial love with all its complexities. It is a story told with wide-eyed wonder, laced with nostalgia for how everyday moments shape who we are and what we leave behind.” Augusta Supple

“Funny, poignant and thought provoking. Flat Pack is a keepsake of childhood experience of a family affected by war. A must watch.” - Belinda Taylor

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE WORKSHOP?

During this workshop participants will explore techniques for taking a personal story and constructing it for the stage. Each participant will create a short monologue during the workshop and have an opportunity to perform it for each other.
