The Blue Lotus Water Garden was established by Geoff and Yvonne Cochrane in 2005 as a seasonal display garden and plant nursery. The Cochrane family has owned the property for over 50 years, employing three generations and a dedicated local team.

The property was initially purchased by Colin Cochrane in the late 1960s for dairy farming. However, his son Geoff, interested in plants, began a vegetable farm focused on Chinese cabbage due to a market shortage in Melbourne. After producing Chinese cabbage until 1990, Geoff built Cochrane Lake in 1991 for recreational fishing with his family.

To protect the fish from predators, Geoff planted waterlilies and lotuses, which flourished and inspired him and Yvonne to create a display garden instead of a fishing venue. Between 2001 and 2005, the property underwent extensive development with additional ponds, walking tracks, and landscaping. Finally, the Blue Lotus Water Garden was opened to the public in 2005, continuing to expand with new plants and improved facilities each year.
