“One hundred years of international cooperation in hydrography”

The theme is designed to showcase progress in knowledge and technology over the past 100 years, while celebrating the ground-breaking work which was done during this period.

The goal is to highlight the past, present, and future of hydrography by showing the important work of early hydrographers, progress in technology, and state of the art in technology.

(IHO, CIRCULAR LETTER 01/2021, 08 January 2021)

7 SSSI CPD points available.  Please see event website for further information

Why should you attend this event?

Are you an engineer, scientist, surveyor, or simply work with geospatial data? Then you may find that understanding how, where, who collects and how collaboration between collector and end user can make your data more intrinsically useful.

Education, concepts of offshore operation, BIG DATA, quality assurance, R&D, industry growth.  These are the key presentation points which you will find great value to better understand current and progressive activities in the hydrographic but also broader geospatial industry.

It's time to get back to Face-2-Face industry socialisation and engagement.  The first hydrographic surveying F2F for over 18 months - hosted on the spectacular beach frontage of Wollongong.  It's a Friday, so spend some quality time on the coast and a weekend away.

IBSC Training in our Region – Past, Present and Future?

Nautical charts have been the un-recognised back-bone to the economies of the trade-dependent nations within our region. These charts were compiled by hydrographic surveyors and cartographers with a specialised set of skills and knowledge acquired through training and experience. However, despite these skills being so fundamental to the region’s trade and economies, and more recently exploration and environmental management, the ability to attain the required knowledge and recognition has been unreasonably difficult. This presentation will take a brief look at the history into the efforts to achieve IBSC training in the region, but more importantly the possibilities for now and the future.

Peter Barr – Freelance Offshore, CPHS1

Coral Sea Cable System (CS2) project

The purpose of the Coral Sea Cable System (CS2) project was to establish an international high-capacity fibre optic (FO) submarine network between Sydney, Australia; Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea (PNG); and Honiara, Solomon Islands (SI); including a domestic configuration of submarine cable system throughout the Solomon Islands; Connecting Honiara to Auki (Malaita Island), Noro (New Georgia Island) and Taro Island (Choiseul Bay). In 2018 Vocus was engaged by the Australian Government (Commonwealth), represented by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) to engineer, design, procure, construct, test and commission the CS2 marine system on a turnkey basis.

Vocus contracted EGS Survey for the purpose of providing information for use in the engineering, installation, and subsequent maintenance of the submarine cable. The primary objective of the route survey activities to determine water depth, seabed hazards, geomorphology and other oceanographic and anthropogenic data and provide a secure technically and economically viable route for the cable. Peter was contracted by Vocus to provide shore landing and offshore representation during both the survey and installation throughout the PNG, Coral Sea and Solomon's CS2 phases. Peter will give an overview of the project primarily on the route corridor survey and also aspects of the 2019 marine cable installation.

Lino Filho – Hydrographic & Cadastral Survey, CPHS2

World Bank Capacity Building Activities for the Improvement of Hydrographic Data and Capability.

Safe Navigation – From Charts to Electronic Navigation Charts (ENC) to...

The evolution of hydrographic software from early CARIS GIS to modern day tools for producing paper charts and ENC’s (i.e. HPD, S-57 Composer etc). Current R&D projects being developed with international product feedback such as Bathy data service with the Canadian Hydrographic Service in which bathymetry is hosted in AWS and streamed directly to end users through Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) services. This really speaks to the theme of 100 years of international cooperation. The development of software (particularly on the chart / ENC frontier) has generally been in partnership with various hydrographic offices throughout the world, quite often as collaborative projects.

HIPP First Year of Operations – Results archived

The Australian Hydrographic Office has embarked a program of co-operation with the Hydrographic Industry to significantly expand the seabed mapping and Hydrographic Survey activity within the Australian EEZ. HydroScheme Industry Partnership Program (HIPP) commenced operations in Feb 2020 with its first annual survey plan HydroScheme 2020 kicking off in Jun 2020. As the first year of operations comes to an end, the results achieved highlight the significant step up in coverage, capability and resources that are possible through co-operation between government and industry. The Scale and type of operations achieved during FY 20/21 are presented.

Aero Leplastrier – GeoScience Australia

AusSeabed - BIG DATA and the progress of AusSeabed.

Peta Cox – Cardno

Adventures over the “Waters”

In celebration of “One hundred years of international cooperation in hydrography”, Peta shares the stories of, not only her adventures since working for Cardno, but of other surveyors and hydrographic surveyors from across the globe. With a side hustle in Podcasting, her “Defining Boundaries” podcast has given Peta an outlet to meet new “friends” through the amazing abilities of social media and the geo-spatial industry.

Peta is honest, real & passionate about her industry and looks for new opportunities at every corner to help share & promote the industry that has given her so much.

Rod Nairn, AM – FIG/IHO/ICA International Board on Standards of Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors and Nautical Cartographers (IBSC)

What has the IBSC brought to Hydrographic Survey Practice? Past, Present and Future.

In general terms, Rod will present on trends in programme and Scheme applications, changes to the Board this year, how the review process has been conducted under COVID, and provide a summary of the status of recognised programmes and Schemes. Consideration of future challenges such as the rise of distance learning opportunities and limitations imposed by the standards.
