Back by popular demand: Things I Wish My Communication Partners Knew returns this November

Join our AAC Experience Advisers for a panel session on how to be an inclusive, respectful communication partner.

This 1-hour panel session will give you practical strategies for interacting with AAC communicators in everyday situations – whether at school, in the workplace or across the community. You’ll hear from three of our Advisers about their lived experience, how you can adapt your AAC communication approach for different situations – and why creativity (and a sense of humour) go a long way.

This panel session will help you:

  • Learn directly from AAC communicators about their lived experience and what helps conversations feel respectful, effective and inclusive
  • Better understand the technical and personal complexities of communicating with AAC devices
  • Challenge some of the most common AAC myths and misconceptions
  • Approach conversations with respect and patience (including real-life examples of when this did and didn’t happen for our Advisers)
  • Support the privacy, autonomy and personal boundaries of AAC communicators
  • Ask for clarification or offer support during conversations – without creating frustration and embarrassment.

Date: Thursday, 19th November

Time: 1 pm – 2 pm AEDT

Price: Free

Location: Live online (recording will be available on Liberator’s YouTube channel after the event.)

You'll receive the meeting link a week before the event.

About the presenters

Joseph (Joey) Harrall is an AAC advocate and university guest lecturer with a passion for enhancing communication accessibility and advocating for people's rights. Between running his chicken business, serving as a Liberator AAC Experience Adviser and taking part in panel discussions, Joey also finds time to help others navigate the complexities of augmentative and alternative communication.

Siobhan Daley is one of Liberator’s NSW AAC Experience Advisers and has used AAC in various forms throughout her life. So, it’s no surprise her professional work centres on educating people on AAC and what it means to live with a disability. When she has time to herself, Siobahn enjoys writing and listening to music.

Ange McReynolds is a keen advocate for people who communicate with AAC and, in particular, through eye gaze. As a Liberator AAC Experience Adviser, Ange helps occupational therapists and speech pathologists better understand Minspeak, mounting systems and eye gaze. She passionately believes that everyone has the right to express themselves and to use a communication device if they can't talk.
