Join us to celebrate the opening and launch of Wangka Wakanutja: The Story of the Papunya Literature Production Centre, our major new exhibition and landmark NLA Publishing title.

Thursday 2 April 2026

6.00pm - 8.00pm

Papunya is the birthplace of the Western Desert art movement. Between 1979 and 1990, a remarkable Aboriginal literary movement took hold seeing the Papunya Literature Production Centre produce hundreds of Pintupi-Luritja bilingual readers (illustrated books) guided by the community’s Elders.

‘Wangka Wakanutja’ is Pintupi-Luritja for ‘the story has been told’. Explore the remarkable achievements of the Papunya community to record and teach their language and culture.

At this event, Professor Daniel Browning will speak with curators from the Papunya community whose custodianship and contributions have been vital to the creation, collection and distribution of these bilingual readers, along with co-curators and authors Vivien Johnson and Samantha Disbray.

Friends will have the opportunity to view the Exhibition following the conversation and enjoy complimentary refreshments and non-alcoholic beverages in the Foyer.
