| 12.00pm - Indigenous Funeral Practices - Kathy Davis Kathy is a Noongar Elder from Balladon Country. Kathy will share her knowledge and lived experience of Indigenous funeral traditions and the importance of culturally respectful practices when supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families. Her insights will help funeral professionals better understand the significance behind customs and ceremonies, enabling us all to work together to achieve meaningful and positive outcomes for families. This session will explore important cultural practices and protocols, including the traditions surrounding the filling of graves, who may participate and whether there are cultural hierarchies or responsibilities to be observed. Kathy will also provide valuable insight into smoking ceremonies — their meaning, cultural significance and when they may be appropriately incorporated into a funeral service. While requests for smoking ceremonies may not arise frequently, they are often requested at significant moments, such as when the hearse and coffin leave the church for burial, or when a loved one is departing for their final journey back to Country. This session offers an important opportunity to deepen understanding, build cultural awareness and strengthen the support we provide to Indigenous families and communities |
