Matt McMahon solo piano
Saturday 9th May 2015, 3:00pm (Doors open at 2:30pm)
Berry School of Arts

"McMahon's playing is ravishing ... ". John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald

Considered one of Australia’s foremost pianist/composers, Matt McMahon is the recipient of Australia’s highest honours in jazz, the National Jazz Award (1999) and Freedman Jazz Fellowship (2005). Matt has performed extensively at many of the leading festivals across Australia and Asia.

This performance showcases the music of his first solo piano album, The Voyage of Mary and William (Paths and Streams Records), which has just been released to rave reviews. This music is contemplation on his musical interests and heritage – paying particular tribute to his forbears Mary and William Navin who came to Australia from Ireland in 1847.

This performance highlights McMahon’s uninterrupted musical thoughts, from quiet to ruminative, to intense and explosive. See McMahon from a unique point of view- No rhythm section, no soloists, just Matt and the piano.

Phillip Johnston Septet
Saturday 9th May 2015, 8:00pm (Doors open at 7:30pm)
Berry School of Arts

Phillip Johnston is an American jazz musician and composer who divides his time between Sydney and New York. As a composer, he has composed theatre music for the Bell Shakespeare Company and film music for Paul Mazursky, Henry Bean and Philip Haas; his silent film scores have been performed at the New York Film Festival, across Europe, and at the Melbourne Festival and Perth Film Festival.

In March of 2015, he did a one-week residency at The Stone in New York, in which he presented 12 different ensembles over six days. In Berry, he will recreate some of this music with a group of top-shelf Australian jazz musicians. Drawing upon his work with The Microscopic Septet and Big Trouble, this seven-piece ensemble featuring four saxophones will present an evening of original swinging jazz, blues and Latin music that “infuses big-band-era dance music with beguilingly modernist sensibilities” (Jazziz).

Special supper tickets are available for the concert with local caterer Garnish supplying fresh, delicious antipasto platters.
