Our final concert of 2018 brings together a program full of contrast, energy and drama. Weber’s Trio in G minor is a favourite in the flute trio repertoire, with its combination of brooding drama and witty playfulness. Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune is one of his most loved orchestral works, and we are excited to be performing an arrangement for flute, cello and piano. The prominent flute part in the orchestral version allows this piece to easily transition into an arrangement full of colour and character. Maurice Duruflé’s Prelude, Recitatif et Variations has charmed audiences in past concerts, with its beautiful melodies and typically French harmonies proving hard to resist. Lowell Liebermann’s Flute Trio No. 1 contrasts the two French works with more angular melodies, yet it has some surprisingly tender moments making for a captivating work.
