The Girls & Boys Brigade
For over 130 years The Girls & Boys Brigade (GBB) has been supporting the diverse needs of children and youth living in inner city Sydney. The organisation was founded by James Fairfax of The Sydney Morning Herald who was deeply concerned about the welfare and condition of the boys engaged in street newspaper selling.
Today our role is to ensure that children and youth in need (aged 5-18) are given opportunities for appropriate support, development and stability in their lives. Our focus in on prevention through early intervention so that children and youth can become happy, healthy, resilient and productive adults. Situated on Riley Street, Surry Hills we provide recreation, education and life skills programs during after school hours, in the evenings, on weekends and school holidays. Programs and activities are provided at our centre and through excursions and camps. The GBB has no affiliation with the international organisations of the same name. We frequently receive referrals from organisations such as Barnados, SDN Smith Family, local schools, Sydney Children's Hospital, DOCS and the City of Sydney Council.
